Notice to Membership Regarding Unauthorized Access and Property Damage on Schremp Island

The Gitlaxdax Nisga’a Terrace Society (GNTS) wishes to inform its membership of recent incidents involving unauthorized access and vandalism at our properties located on Schremp Island.

Between September 17 and September 18, 2026, two separate break-ins occurred on the property, resulting in significant damage to community infrastructure, including our community smokehouses, storage shed, and sea can. Several essential items were removed during these incidents. These items are important to the operation of our traditional food preservation programs and support our ongoing efforts to provide cultural and community-based services to our membership.

The Society takes these events very seriously and is actively cooperating with the Terrace RCMP Detachment, which is currently investigating the matter. We are committed to assisting law enforcement in identifying those responsible and recovering the stolen equipment and materials.

To protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure the safety of the site, we respectfully request that all unauthorized individuals refrain from accessing the Schremp Island property until further notice.

The Society recognizes the importance of these facilities and programs to our members and is working diligently to assess the damage, secure the property, and restore affected operations as quickly as possible. We appreciate the patience, understanding, and support of our membership during this time.
